A creative connection during these times.

Back to Basics:

Postal/Mail Art Exhibition-Project

This project is designed to keep our artist community from all over the world in conversation.  The submission flyer for the Back to Basics was translated into three different languages. We are looking at  methods of communication as historically practised by artists and are interested in a physical exchange as a contrast to the now pervasive electronic communication.  We want to support and highlight the United States Postal Service, the workers who have always been on the front lines of community contact and relations, and we acknowledge that the post office is under political attack.

Hand-to-Hand Exchange:

This Mail Art exhibition-project relates to hand to hand exchange and implied human contact during these times of pandemic and  restrictions on human interaction.  We feel so honored  to see and physically experience artwork and literary pieces sent to us.  When we go into our gallery we can sense the creative spirit alive in the room.  We are continually creating videos, photos and other documentation to share with the larger online  community, and we hope that someday this project will be shown in a gallery  and document an unprecedented moment in history.

Thoughts on Information Exchange Related to Postal Art:

The oldest forms of portable writing and physical exchange are found in the Americas, Africa, Pacific Islands,  and Asia. The Cuneiform Tablet (3,200 BCE) was the beginning of written exchange, and documented all kinds of transactions. Mail Art was pervasive throughout history.  But artists in the 1950s and 60s introduced the concept into mainstream contemporary art.

About Single Tree Arts

Single Tree Arts is an arts collective made up of artists Eszter Delgado and Martin Betz.  We started this initiative while living in Northern San Diego County to address a major discrepancy in the representation of artists of color and identity. Single Tree Arts began when we were asked to coordinate a  public art call by the San Diego County Public Library Systems for a new library construction project.  As we facilitated this competition, we helped realize the importance of diversity in their outreach and selections.  Now located in Los Angeles, Single Tree Arts has expanded its projects and programs.

Projects include:

  • Organized exhibitions throughout San Diego, Orange and Los Angeles County’s.

  • Developed Large international public art competitions.

  • Grant Panelist for organizations such California Arts Council and Los Angeles County Arts Commissions, City of Los Angeles, and City of Pasadena.

  • Participated on many arts organization Board of Directors.

  • Online collaborative projects.

  • Online educational initiatives.
