Week 4
Amelia Amell, “Archetype of an Artist”, mixed media, 2020.
We had the pleasure of working with her on an exhibition in 2019. She continues to explore the complexities of the Dominican Republic diaspora and her relationship contemporary American society both personal and universal. This piece is an amazing contrast to a similar work which is approximately 26 feet long and 8 feet high!
Aubry Acosta, “5pm Bedroom Plant Shadows”, Acrylic and micro-pen on cardboard, 2020.
This work sets up an interesting contrast between vibrancy of color and the possibility of darkness and isolation. Bedrooms at 5pm - evoke a melancholy feeling that is then wiped out by intense color! I am continually amazed by the power of small work!
Evie Erickson, “Bloom”, mixed media, 2020.
This piece has power! the use of materials that are torn and mundane to create beauty is symbolic of the up and coming battle to create a new society from the ashes of the old. This work is about hope!
Marianne Sadowski, “Untitled” with poem by Lao Tse, Lino-cut and mono print, 2020.
This piece is a perfect mirror of the poem. As you look closely at the imagery you can see the attention to detail and the references to the positive and negative spaces. This piece tells us to not just consider the reality facing us, but to look at the undefined spaces! It’s a testimonial to what artist know well- that is to look where others cannot see!
Laura Stickney, “Workaday”, etching and poem by the artist, 2020.
This piece speaks to the observations that are fundamental to the literary and artistic experience. We know that the answers might not lie with us who follow the social order, but the individual who finds it necessary to clean up the world! We all suspect the answers to the current crisis do not lie within the status quo even though many desperately kling to that hope!
